Nurse Self-Care After a Long Shift: 10 Simple Ways to Reset

Nurse Self-Care After a Long Shift: 10 Simple Ways to Reset

After a long shift, it can be difficult to switch from caring for everyone else to caring for yourself. Your body may be home, but your mind can still be replaying the day, thinking about what needs to be done tomorrow, or simply trying to come down from hours of being “on.”

As a registered nurse, I understand how easy it is to put your own needs at the bottom of the list. Nurse self-care doesn’t have to mean an elaborate routine or an entire day at the spa. Sometimes, a meaningful reset begins with just a few intentional minutes. Here are 10 simple ways to help you transition from a demanding shift into a calmer moment at home.

1. Create a Transition Ritual

Give yourself a simple signal that the workday is over. Change into comfortable clothes, wash your face, dim the lights, or sit quietly for a few minutes. Repeating the same small ritual after each shift can help create a clear boundary between work and home.

2. Take Five Slow, Intentional Breaths

Before reaching for your phone or starting the next task, pause. Take five slow breaths and allow your shoulders to relax. You don’t need a complicated meditation routine—a few intentional breaths can create a moment to reconnect with yourself.

3. Change the Atmosphere Around You

Your surroundings can become part of your reset ritual. Lower the lights, play calming music, open a window, or introduce a scent you enjoy. A candle or aromatherapy mist can help create a sensory cue that says, the shift is over; this moment is mine.

4. Hydrate Before You Do Anything Else

Long shifts can make it easy to forget your own basic needs. Before moving on to chores or responsibilities at home, drink a glass of water and give your body a moment to replenish.

5. Give Yourself Permission to Be Quiet

You spend hours answering questions, listening, communicating, and caring for others. It’s okay to come home and need quiet. Even 10 minutes without conversation, television, or scrolling can become a small act of self-care.

6. Choose a Scent That Matches What You Need

Scent can become part of an intentional wellness ritual. You might choose something soft and calming when you want to unwind, something fresh when you need to reset and refocus, or a scent that simply reminds you of somewhere you love. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s creating an environment that feels supportive to you.

7. Eat Something That Nourishes You

After a busy shift, it can be tempting to skip a meal or grab whatever is easiest. When possible, choose something that helps you feel replenished. Caring for yourself includes giving your body the fuel it needs.

8. Let Go of the Shift

Some days follow you home. Give yourself permission to acknowledge what happened without carrying every moment into the rest of your evening. Try writing down one thought, talking briefly with someone you trust, or simply reminding yourself: I did what I could today. Now I can rest.

9. Protect a Small Pocket of Time for Yourself

Self-care doesn’t have to take hours. Protect 10 or 15 minutes that belong only to you. Read, stretch, sit outside, take a warm shower, enjoy your favorite scent, or simply do nothing. Small moments count.

10. Ask Yourself One Simple Question

Before the evening gets away from you, pause and ask: What do I need most right now? Maybe the answer is rest. Maybe it’s quiet, connection, movement, laughter, or simply an earlier bedtime. Listen to the answer without judging it.

Your Reset Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

Self-care for nurses isn’t about adding another task to an already full schedule. It’s about recognizing that the person who spends so much time caring for others deserves moments of care, too.

At Nurse Calm Aromatherapy™, I believe small, intentional rituals can help create meaningful moments of calm, focus, confidence, and escape. Whether your reset is five quiet breaths, a warm shower, your favorite scent, or simply sitting in silence for 10 minutes, choose what feels supportive to you.

Start small. Make it yours. And remember—you deserve a moment to reset, too.
